Orthotics & Footwear Advice

Support where your feet need it

Orthotics are inserts worn inside your shoes that support and gently correct the way your feet function. Fitted well, they can relieve heel and arch pain, improve comfort when standing or walking for long periods, and help correct biomechanical problems identified in a biomechanical assessment.

Custom-made and over-the-counter options

Not every foot needs a custom device. We recommend the right option for your feet, your activity and your budget:

  • Custom-made orthotics — prescribed and manufactured for your feet specifically, to assist in the treatment of a particular foot problem
  • Over-the-counter orthotic inserts — quality pre-made devices that suit many patients at a lower cost
  • Orthotic fittings and reviews — ensuring your devices fit correctly and continue to do their job as they wear

Footwear advice for every age

The wrong shoes can undo good treatment. We provide footwear advice for everyone — infants and young children with developing feet, adults on their feet all day, athletes in sport-specific footwear, older people needing stability and support, and patients recovering from injury. Bring your everyday shoes to your appointment: their wear pattern tells us a lot.

Can orthotics help back pain?

In some patients, correcting the biomechanics of the stride with appropriate orthotics can relieve lower back pain as well as foot and leg pain. If your back pain has a mechanical cause in your gait, a podiatry assessment is a sensible place to start.
